7 Boho Successful Self Care Tips

Now, more than ever, it matters to take extra good care of yourself. Taking care of yourself is not a luxury, it is a practical necessity. After all, if you do not take care of yourself – who will? Doing this is not a lazy indulgence when done properly, it will assist you in leading a productive life overall.

Here are 7 of our very favorite tips, to help your Boho life and increase the self-care you give yourself. Please do share your own self care tips with us in the comments, as we all can learn from each other!

#1: Be gentle with yourself (and others!)

Some make the mistake of thinking when you are “gentle” with yourself that you are avoiding doing things, or that you are being a big baby – but not so! Instead, you are simply not being unkind to yourself, while taking smaller steps towards reaching any goal.

Let’s use the example of wanting to give up smoking. Most of us know this is a hard habit to quit & there are so many reasons to give it up. Instead of giving yourself mean looks in the mirror and saying hard things to yourself about why you haven’t quit smoking, try instead, “what support do I need to quit this now?” Because there are many methods to quitting smoking and you need to choose the one that works best for you, that motivates you. Being gentle with yourself will work, when screaming inside your head to make changes simply stops you in your tracks.

#2: Move your body every single day

No, we do not care what type of exercise you do, or even if you actually call it “exercising.” There are so many things you can do. Aim to move your body for a minimum of 1 hour every day, doing something that you enjoy.  Try out our yoga hammock.

For some, this could be an intense workout and others this is much more simple. Try looking on YouTube for some of your favorite types of exercise such as yoga, tai chi, belly dancing and more – you can even do an advanced search to choose videos that are either less than 20 minutes or more than this.

#3: Try keeping a diary/journal

Writing down how your day has gone sometimes can make it a much better day, or give you perspective about how to make changes to make tomorrow an even better one.

Not everyone who keeps a diary or journals writes exactly what happened to them from moment to moment about their day. You might write a poem, or a list of things you want to do that week or something else that inspires you.  It may even be just a new dress you saw

The goal of keeping a journal is to express yourself, and by doing this, you soothe your soul.

#4: Stay connected with the people you love and care about

During social distancing, this has felt hard. We can’t hug each other or visit with each other in person. But you can call people on the telephone, text, send e-mails and have virtual conversations through video technology. This is more connection than any other generation previous to ours has had. So do make the effort to stay connected with those you love.

Even if you don’t know what to talk about, share a joke or a funny video. Just reach out and offer to listen to someone. Ask “how was your day?” and let them talk.

#5: Spend time with a pet

One of the most amazing things that has been happening across North America during this time, is pets in animal shelters are now eagerly being fostered in people’s apartments and homes, and quickly adopted. Why? Because these adorable pets are pure, unconditional love and when we are all social distancing, it is wonderful to have that four-footed furry buddy you know will always be there.

If you are able to foster a pet now, quite likely your local animal shelter will be glad to hear from you. Most shelters will pay for that pet’s food, litter and even their vet bill costs while you are fostering, so what you are truly providing is simply the love for them. In return, they love you too!  Don't forget to bundle up if going outside!

#6: Stay organized

At first glance, this may not sound like a very “hippie” thing to say, but hear us out. If it takes you 45 minutes to find your keys or a document you need to get your hands on, then your stress level is only going to rise. Which is going to cause your self-care routine to feel quite neglectful to you in the long-term.

Be good to yourself and use some of the quiet time we all have at home now in our homes or apartments, to organize your paperwork and important things. So, you can find things easily when and if you need them.  A well thought out bag can be very helpful as well or maybe even something organize your jewelry.

#7: Eat real food & get a good night’s sleep!

Most vegetarians will admit they can’t resist a good “comfort” food such as a buttered grilled cheese sandwich or creamy mac n’ cheese with a cup of tomato soup. But to really help your self-care and soul, try to eat 5 fruits n’ veggies every day, including eating ones that vary in color, so you are “covering the rainbow” which they say is the healthiest way to get all of your vitamins naturally.

Eat real food, the simplest way to do this is to read the ingredients in anything you want to eat or drink – if you can’t pronounce the ingredients, then they are likely processed in some way.

Don’t neglect the self-care healing power of a good night’s sleep. When you miss sleep, it affects your physical body, your stress level and overall feeling of well-being. Be good to yourself and sleep well.

Boho self-care does not have to be hard, and most of it is easily added into your daily routine. Try some of our favorite tips to improve your life – we know you’ll be glad you did!
